Bulldogs Wrestle Ringnecks

Osborne Bulldogs hosted the Hill City Ringnecks Friday night at Liberty Field. The bulldogs were coming off a close loss against the Plainville Cardinals, while the Ringnecks were trying to bounce back from a 68 – 0 beating by the Smith Center Redmen.

The bulldogs won the coin toss, but chose to defer to the second half. Dennis Rucinski tee’d up the ball and kicked the game into action. The Ringnecks got a decent return and started in good field position. Hill City broke a run early and drew first blood with only 1:40 gone from the play clock. The point after was good and Hill City lead with a score of 7 – 0. Osborne fielded the resulting kick off and got a decent return. Osborne drove the ball and got a great run from Josh Conway. With the ball on Hill City’s 2-yard line, Osborne had four attempts at the endzone, but Hill City held Osborne and took over on downs. The bulldog defense toughened up and intercepted a pass from Hill City’s David Gerstner. With the ball 1rst and goal, it was looking promising for the dogs. Unfortunately, the dogs fumbled and the Ringnecks recovered. The bulldog defense was held by the Ringnecks in the endzone, resulting in a safety. Osborne 2 Hill City 7. Hill City kicked off from their 20-yard line, and Joe Sumpter fielded the kick. Sumpter ran the kick off all the way back for a touch down. Point after attempt by Rucinski was wide right and no good. Osborne 8 Hill City 7. Osborne kicked to Hill City and the Ringnecks started their drive in good field position. Hill City’s Gerstner hit Slattery on a passing route with 43 seconds left in the first quarter, resulting in a touch down. Point after attempt good. Osborne 8 Hill City 14. The second quarter started much the same as the first quarter, with Hill City striking with 10:52 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Point after attempt was good. Osborne 8 Hill City 21. The 2nd quarter was hard fought back and forth, but no additional scoring occurred. Osborne had several opportunities to score with drives starting inside Hill City’s 10 yard line, but the Ringneck defense shutdown Osborne’s offense.

The 2nd half started with a bang for Osborne. Hill City kicked off, and Osborne’s Andrew Conway ran it all the way back for a touch down. Rucinski’s point after attempt failed. Osborne 14 Hill City 21. Hill City received the resulting kick off and started with good field position. The Ringnecks drove the ball down the field, but turned it over when the Bulldog defense caused a fumble. On Osborne’s next offensive set, Conway broke a 53-yard run and was tackled inside Hill City’s 10-yard line. Four shots at the endzone resulted in no points as the Ringneck defense once again held. Hill City’s offense turned the ball over with a fumble, but again, four shots at the endzone came up short. Hill City then broke things open and scored on a long run with 6:48 left in the fourth quarter. Point after attempt was no good. Osborne 14 Hill City 27. Osborne received the kick but couldn’t do anything offensively. Hill City drove down to the Osborne 5, but the dogs held and took over on downs. On the second play of the resulting Osborne drive, Hill City tackled Conway in the endzone for a safety. Osborne 14 Hill City 29. Osborne kicked the ball from the 20-yard line. Hill City returned it 19 yards and setup their offense. The Ringnecks ran two plays and zero’d the clock. Final score Osborne 14 Hill City 29.

Osborne’s offense had plenty of opportunities to tie and go up on the Ringnecks, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. Osborne’s record goes to 0 and 3. Next Friday, September 21, the Bulldogs host the Trego Eagles at Liberty Field.
